read moreTwo months after its official opening, the Manly Andrew ‘Boy’ Charlton Aquatic Centre will be opening its new pools to the public with a free community open day tomorrow (Saturday 13th August).
Officially opened by the former Mayor of Manly, Jean Hay on Saturday 11th June 2016, the full opening of the $17.5 million redevelopment was delayed until its cogeneration heating plant was fully operational.
Welcomes visitors to the recently redeveloped aquatic centre and encouraging locals to enjoy a free swim or workout, Northern Beaches Council General Manager Mark Ferguson stated “a number of activities have been planned to celebrate the redeveloped centre and we hope to see as many community members as possible join us.”
Activities include use of a new inflatable in the pools, an aquatic fitness class and Body PUMP and Cycle classes in the facility’s Group Fitness Room.
Ferguson added “the Manly Andrew ‘Boy’ Charlton Aquatic Centre is a beautiful aquatic facility and one that will be well-used by the whole Northern Beaches community in the immediate and long term.
“Key to our vision was retaining key aspects of the old swim centre most important to the community whilst improving the overall amenity of the facility.
“By focusing on providing year round learn to swim programs, swimming training and multi-purpose leisure activities, the centre is a one stop shop for patrons and a unique facility that will appeal to the wider community.”
Commenting on the cogeneration unit, Ferguson concluded “the aquatic centre has been designed with significant environment benefits ... the C02 savings achieved each year from the centre’s ‘cogeneration plant’ energy system are equivalent to taking 64 cars off the road each year.”
