read moreNT Worksafe has launched an investigation after a woman was hospitalised on the Darwin Festival's opening night.
A 28-year-old technician was doing maintenance on a fire effects device, which had failed to detonate during the Limbo show, when it exploded and burned her face, arms and chest.
She was treated at the Royal Darwin Hospital and is now recovering.
According to a statement from NT WorkSafe, the reason why the device - known as the ‘SAFEX-FLAMEJETT’ - malfunctioned is still being determined.
It has been removed from the upcoming performances of the show.
As reported by the ABC, the production company is currently reviewing its use in consultation with NT Worksafe.
Darwin Festival Chief Executive Emily Mann said the removal of the device would not hamper the Limbo performance, described online as a mix of cabaret, circus and acrobatics, advising “the show is as spectacular as it always will be.”
Mann said spectators should not be deterred by the mishap, as the "highest standard of safety" was in place, advising “the production team has the highest standard of safety in place and uses qualified techs.
"At no time during any performance is the audience, or performers or crew at any risk from injury.
"We have no concerns. The show is a runaway success, we have a sell out night after night and we looked forward to all the people of Darwin coming along to enjoy the rest of the season of Limbo."
The Darwin Festival runs from 9th to 26th August.
