OneMusic Australia licencing system to launch on 1st July

OneMusic Australia licencing system to launch on 1st July
June 27, 2019

Promising to streamline the administration of licence payments for any Australian businesses playing music - including gyms, venues, festivals, shops, pubs, cafes, restaurants and bars - the new OneMusic Australia is to launch on 1st July.

Simplifying copyright compliance for more than 100,000 premises nationwide which use music as part of their commercial activity, OneMusic Australia will allow businesses to establish and maintain their licence in one place giving greater transparency to the process.

This arrival of OneMusic Australia comes as a result of extensive and ongoing consultation with a range of industry sectors over the past two years by the two Australian rights management organisations behind the initiative, the Phonographic Performance Company of Australia Ltd (PPCA) and the Australasian Performing Right Association and Australasian Mechanical Copyright Owners Society (APRA AMCOS).

Introducing OneMusic Australia, APRA AMCOS Chief Executive, Dean Ormston explains “by simplifying and unifying music copyright management, OneMusic will make compliance easier and make sure rights holders are fully remunerated for both rights when their music is played in public.

“We know many businesses found it hard to deal with two separate rights organisations and some neglected their obligations altogether. A simple, single, easy-to-use system will significantly reduce the administration burden for everyone.”

PPCA Chief Executive, Dan Rosen added “I am excited to launch the OneMusic Australia initiative to deliver an improved licensing service for music users.

“This is an important step to simplify the process of using music for tens of thousands of businesses around Australia and continue our work in supporting innovation and creativity for the Australian music industry.”

While digital revenue from consumer streaming services is growing, the royalties earned from public performance remain a substantial source of income for music creators.

Australia, like many countries, has had more than one collection agency for royalties owed to music creators.

APRA AMCOS collects on behalf of member songwriters, music publishers and composers while PPCA collects on behalf of recording artists and record labels.

The OneMusic Australia initiative is focused on public performance licensing for business and both APRA AMCOS and PPCA will continue to manage their other licensing arrangements (such as broadcasting and online services) independently.

APRA AMCOS and PPCA subscribe to the Australian Code of Conduct for Copyright Collecting Societies and the activities of OneMusic will also be covered by this code.
