read moreMore than 700 women from 31 different sports will be supported to reach their leadership potential through the Federal Government’s Women Leaders in Sport (WLIS) program.
The $400,000 funding, to be provided across 84 successful projects, was announced by Federal Minister for Sport Sussan Ley and Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for Women, Michaelia Cash.
Minister Ley (pictured) said the program is targeted at increasing female representation in sport leadership roles and has provided support for more than 22,000 Australian women since its inception in 2002.
Minister Ley stated “women are fundamental to the fabric of sporting clubs and I want to continue to see more women leaders in sport.
“The (Federal) Government is delighted to assist some of the many women making their mark in sport to reach their leadership potential and ensure that women are appropriately represented across all areas of sport.”
The program provides women with opportunities to undertake intermediate to advanced training in the areas of coaching, communications, media and marketing, governance, management, administration and officiating.
Minister Cash said the programme would give women across the country the opportunity to develop themselves in a range of sporting roles.
She added “it is encouraging to note that almost half of the successful applications relate to improving women’s leadership in the areas of sports management, governance and administration.
“Within this great pool of talented women in sport, it is pleasing to see women leaders in regional areas representing approximately 25 per cent of recipients.”
There are two types of grants available under the WLIS programme - individual grants of up to $5,000 per annum and organisation grants of up to $10,000 per annum.
Grants can be used by volunteers, sport sector employees and organisations for a range of activities to support women in their leadership aspirations in sport.
The WLIS grant is jointly funded by the Office for Women and the Australian Sports Commission.
