Falls Creek prepares for biggest opening weekend since 2000

Falls Creek prepares for biggest opening weekend since 2000
June 6, 2019

With strong pre-season snowfall and excellent snowmaking conditions, Falls Creek has announced that it would have skiing and snowboarding open for visitors when it officially opens its season on Saturday 8th June. Seven lifts will turn on day one of the season, the highest number of opening weekend lifts since the record-breaking 2000 snow season.

Halleys Comet, Eagle Express, Drovers, Towers, and Gully Chairlifts will turn, along with Mouse Trap and Pete’s Train surface lifts. This will open a huge range of green and blue terrain for visitors keen to get the season started.

Falls Creek’s season has been set up in near perfect form. Two major snow systems have delivered over 80cm of natural snowfall in the two weeks leading to opening. Further base preparation has been possible with ideal snowmaking conditions throughout much of the same period.

Falls Creek Resort Management Director of Marketing and Communications, Jo Prothero, said there was a lot to be excited about this time round, stating "we’ve been watching the snow fall with real enthusiasm over the past fortnight. Conditions out in the ski field are excellent and visitors are going to be treated with terrain you don’t usually see until a little later in the season.

“All up 80cm has fallen from the two big storms and we’re sitting at a depth of around half a metre for opening day. If you have wanted to come and enjoy an opening weekend, this year is definitely the one to head up for.”

One of Falls Creek’s most popular aspects is its famous village which Prothero says the operations crew are working overtime to deliver a truly unique ski in ski out experience this early in the season.

Prothero added “everybody loves our snow-bound village and tonight snow crews will be out on the streets preparing it for the influx of visitors. We can’t quite let the cat out of the bag yet but it’s looking promising that we will have ski-in, ski-out for opening weekend which, according to our records, hasn’t happened before."

• Lifts and runs will be open from 8:30am, Saturday 8th June
• Lift Passes are on sale online for $97 per day for adults and $54 for children
• Snowsports School lessons will commence from Saturday morning for all levels
• Tobogganing is open at the Windy Corner slope
• Season opening fireworks will be held at 6:30pm in the Village Bowl with fire pits and marshmallows.
