City of Darwin has commenced a $1.6 million beautification program of its suburban streetscapes, with landscaping at the Wagaman Shopping area the first of eight projects to be completed by 30th June 2020.
Each of Darwin’s four Wards have been allocated $360,000 for local projects, with each of the projects identified by Ward Aldermen.
While the projects are small in scale, Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis said they would make a real difference to streetscapes in local suburban areas advising “the eight projects we have identified all focus on improving the amenity of our suburbs through landscaping, including colourful garden beds, irrigated turf, tree planting, seating and urban infrastructure.
“These projects are in highly visible areas and will add colour, greenery and cooling to our suburban streets and shopping areas.”
All the landscaping projects will incorporate plant species that require minimal maintenance, and works are being undertaken by City of Darwin’s experienced landscaping team, supported by local contractors.
The Wagaman Shopping area will receive a much-needed facelift with ground cover including Dwarf Gardenia, shrubs including Mock Orange and Flax Lily and trees including White Gum, Nut Horsielda and Silver Cajuput.
Lord Mayor Vatskalis added “all of these plants are hardy and suited to conditions here in the Top End.
“Our focus is on planting the right tree in the right place and we expect these trees to thrive and add real vibrancy to these local areas.”
City of Darwin committed more than $5.8 million to beautification projects in the 2019/20 Municipal Plan and Budget, including $3.7 million for upgrades to Daly Street, $1.1 million for tree planting across the municipality and $1 million for community infrastructure projects.
