Crocosaurus Cove Cage of Death a global phenomena
June 7, 2016

Since opening its doors in July 2008, Crocosaurus Cove Darwin has set a new standard of interaction with Saltwater crocodiles - with the unique attraction gaining increasing recognition.

Its inner city location, housing almost 200 crocodiles, including some of Australia’s largest Saltwater crocodiles, Crocosaurus Cove’s aquarium like underwater viewing of these remarkable reptiles has proven extremely popular with both locals and tourists alike.

However, it is the Cage of Death, Australia’s only crocodile dive that has firmly put Crocosaurus Cove on the map.

Thousands of people have been thrilled and terrified by sharing an underwater experience with a 5 metre crocodile, with the innovative activity featuring in varied media around the world.

Every dive includes 15 minutes in the enclosure separated from a massive Saltwater crocodiles by just a sheet of clear acrylic.

Commenting on the experience, a Crocosaurus Cove Darwin spokesperson explains “regular feeding by our crocodile handlers when people are inside the cage encourages more movement from the crocodiles and ensures an up close and personal, face to face encounter that must be seen to be believed!”

Operated by an over-head monorail and designed for one or two people per cage, the Cage of Death has guests suspended above the crocodiles before being lowered into the pen to get an up close look at tge reptiles.

Crocosaurus Cove’s most famous resident is ‘Burt’, a 5 metre + crocodile who featured alongside Paul Hogan and Linda Kozlowski in the original Crocodile Dundee movie as well as providing the basis for the digital crocodile in the film Rogue.

Commenting on the attraction of Saltwater crocodiles, General Manager Michael Scott explained “in the Northern Territory, the saltwater crocodile is an icon and is part of our life. They are always in the news, either in someone's swimming pool or killing someone's favorite horse."

The Cage of Death operates 12 times per day.
