read moreSince opening in October last year, the City of Casey’s Bunjil Place development has been attracting a wide range of cultural activities.
The $125 million multipurpose arts, civic and community facility provides a broad range of spaces for council and community organisations and serves a number of functions with its library, 800-seat theatre, gathering and meeting spaces, council offices, an art gallery, a flexible event space and an outdoor plaza.
All of these spaces are connected by a foyer that sits in the heart of the building.
Conceived as an “inviting central heart for the community that celebrates participation, belonging and civic pride”, the cultural precinct is one of the largest projects to have ever been undertaken by a local council in Victoria.
Ahead of the building’s official opening in late October, City of Casey Mayor Sam Aziz advised “Council has been dedicated in its cause to provide quality arts and cultural facilities that our residents, and those in surrounding regions, deserve so we couldn’t be prouder of this facility and what it has to offer.”
While the library is attracting close to 500,000 people each year, since opening is theatre space has been booked months ahead with a range of content including the Council’s citizenship ceremonies, choral performances and concerts by Circus Oz, The Celtic Tenors and the Spark Youth Dance Company.
The architects explain that the building design reflects an abstracted version of the building’s namesake, Bunjil, an eagle figure that appears in Boon Wurrung creation myth, which is expressed in the arrangement of the building’s two wings and slender roof.
Bunjil Place is a prime location for residents, and is walking distance to the Westfield’s Fountain gate, Casey Aquatic Recreational Centre and easily accessible public transport.
