Alpine Resorts welcome weekend snow

With the start of the weekend seeing generous snowfalls across the Australia’s alpine region, ski fields have started operating at resorts including Mount Hotham, Falls Creek and Mount Buller in Victoria.

The snowfalls are welcome in the wake of ski resorts being unable to operate their ski lifts during their King's Birthday long weekend opening due to lack of snow.

Snowfalls have seen Mount Hotham enjoy a 33-centimetre snow base, while storms have delivered 36cm at Falls Creek. As a result, ski schools and lessons are operating over the weekend at each resort.

Mt Buller woke to 14cms of fresh snow blanketing the resort this morning with its lifts now in operation, aided by the resort’s snow making equipment.

Mt Hotham's General Manager of Operations, Len Dobell, said with significant snow falling over the past week, the team had been hard at work getting the mountain "ready to spin lifts."

Dobell told the ABC “we can't wait to welcome guests back for another great season.”

A statement from Mt Buller advised “the cold temperatures have been ideal for snowmaking to get underway on the summit area and the resort is working to collaborate with mother nature to get more terrain open as soon as conditions permit.

“More snowfall is in the forecast this week and will be perfect timing for visitors planning their snow holidays for the school break. The resort currently has skiing and snowboarding on Bourke Street and sightseeing on the Northside Express chairlift.”

Mt Buller’s Village Toboggan Park is also open for snowplay.

Snowfalls at Thredbo have currently seen its Walkabout in the Cruiser Area open and its Merritts Gondola and Kosciuszko Chairlift open for scenic passengers.

Thredbo’s Cruiser and Gunbarrel chairlifts are expected to start running for skiing and snowboarding in the coming days.

The snow has triggered a strong flow of bookings and enquiries to the resorts.
