Adelaide Oval wins further multiple design and innovation awards

Adelaide Oval wins further multiple design and innovation awards
November 7, 2015

Having already secured a number of awards for its design and innovation, the Adelaide Oval has enjoyed a remarkable week of recognition, with a series of further awards including the presentation of the National Public Building of the Year Award at the Australian Institute of Architects (AIA) National Awards and a High Commendation in the World Building of the Year category at the World Festival of Architecture in Singapore.

Cox Architecture, Walter Brooke and Hames Sharley combined to win the prestigious National Award for Public Architecture at the AIA’s 2015 National Awards held in Brisbane on Thursday night.

In recognising the efforts of the architecture team, the Award jury stated “the redevelopment of the Adelaide Oval has set a new standard for facilitating a range of sporting and hospitality events within a major sports stadium.

“All parts of the Adelaide Oval have been carefully considered to produce what must be, nationally, one of the most accessible and most spatially dramatic public buildings devoted to sport.”

In the past week the redevelopment has won the Architectural Excellence Award at the Australian Institute of Quantity Surveyors’ 2015 Infinite Value Awards.

The Australian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (AQIS) recognised the Adelaide Oval redevelopment for its transformation of the existing arena into a world-class multi-purpose sporting and entertainment facility – and its delivery under budget.

Having been among 338 buildings shortlisted for the title of World Building of the Year at the World Architecture Festival, held in Singapore between 4th and 6th November, the development received a High Commendation.

In addition, Enware Australia’s water saving installations at the venue won the 2015 Innovation of the Year Category at the Sustainability Awards.

Enware developed and installed a Smartflow water saving initiative at the Adelaide Oval. The solution involved a central software system that individually managed each bathroom within the venue, minimising water consumption by controlling the demand-based flushing while maintaining a fresh bathroom environment.

According to the Sustainability Award judges, “the commercial application of this system is definitely needed in large sporting venues and public entertainment venues where water from urinals is flushed on an automated process.

“Its water saving initiatives - sequencing automatic flushes, balancing flushing frequency to user numbers - are unique and an excellent application for Australia given the ongoing scarcity of our water.

“Major venues can be very wasteful users so this innovation shows how we can do things so much more efficiently.”

Commenting on the Adelaide Oval, senior associate and Adelaide studio leader for Cox Architecture Adam Hannon said the project’s short-listing in the sports category was testament to South Australian capabilities.

Hannon stated “I think the Adelaide Oval project shows what South Australia is capable of and what it can produce in relation to innovation and ingenuity to produce a built outcome that is world class.”

Hannon also sees how the project has transformed Adelaide as a city, adding “we think one of the great successes of this project is not just the built form and the architecture and the interior, but actually in the way the public has engaged with the project.

“It is generally acknowledged outside of South Australia, in Australia and indeed the world that it has had a major impact on the city.

“It has been a catalyst in reviving the riverbank precinct and bringing crowds through the city on game day.”

Adelaide Oval Stadium Management Authority Chief Executive Andrew Daniels paid tribute to the architects behind the Adelaide Oval redevelopment.

Daniels commented “it’s not enough to say that the work done by Cox Architecture, Walter Brooke and Hames Sharley is world class.

“That’s obvious to anyone who has visited the Adelaide Oval over the past two years.

“What has been recognised with this award is that they have created a piece of public infrastructure that is both aesthetically and functionally brilliant – both awe-inspiring and accessible.

“That is a remarkable achievement, and one of which all South Australians can be incredibly proud.

“Adelaide Oval is now Adelaide’s beacon to the world and, on behalf of everyone at the Adelaide Oval, I would like to congratulate the teams at Cox Architecture, Walter Brooke and Hames Sharley on winning this major national award.”

The AQIS Value Awards also recognised Bendigo’s Ulumbarra Theatre project by Prowse Quantity Surveyors as the best Government Project.
